Software Architect (Fintech)

Location: Remote, hybrid, or onsite from home or the Santa Barbara office. Employees must reside in California, Illinois, Texas, Minnesota, Colorado, Georgia, New York, Massachusetts, or Connecticut and must be eligible to work in the United States.

Base salary: $240,000–$275,000 annually, plus the Total Rewards Plan.

What you will do

• Lead open-ended engineering initiatives from initial concept through production in partnership with Product and Engineering leadership.
• Design high-risk systems end to end, documenting requirements, trade-offs, failure modes, and implementation guidance.
• Write production Java every sprint, review pull requests, and establish testing strategies for high-risk payment paths.
• Architect enterprise capabilities including SSO, role-based access, audit trails, multi-merchant hierarchy, and versioned partner APIs.
• Design processor-agnostic payment infrastructure and optimize integrations covering message mapping, reversals, and settlement reconciliation.
• Define SLOs and monitoring, improve fault tolerance, lead root-cause analysis, reduce PCI scope, and establish guardrails for AI-generated code.

Requirements

• 10+ years of professional software engineering experience with ownership of production systems.
• 5+ years of architecture experience as an Architect, Staff Engineer, or Principal Engineer across multiple services or teams.
• 5+ years of Java experience, including web frameworks and the JVM ecosystem, with production Java work within the last 12 months.
• Experience mentoring senior and mid-level engineers through code reviews, design reviews, and pairing.
• Production experience with AWS, Linux, relational databases, CI/CD, infrastructure as code, and observability tooling.
• Experience operating high-availability transactional systems with direct financial or customer impact, plus current use of AI coding assistants or agents.

Nice to have

• Payments or fintech experience, including card processing, gateways, or acquiring.
• Experience designing systems in a PCI DSS-regulated environment.
• BS in Computer Science or equivalent applied experience.
