Senior Software Engineer (COBOL/Mainframe)

Location: Richmond, VA or Lynchburg, VA. A hybrid schedule with remote and in-office days is required for employees residing within 50 miles of a hirify.global/CareScout office. In-office days are Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, with core hours targeting 9am–5pm EST.

National salary range: $96,700–$145,000 per year, plus eligibility for a performance-based bonus incentive plan.

What you will do

• Code, test, debug, implement, and document program changes and technical solutions.
• Support the Reinsurance application (TAI) and provide production support for mainframe systems.
• Analyze existing systems, program requirements, and implementation timelines.
• Design enhancements and develop test plans to verify new or modified programs.
• Provide technical guidance on complex programming efforts and conduct peer reviews and other quality assurance activities.
• Collaborate with business partners, vendors, project stakeholders, and technical teams across multiple concurrent initiatives.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent education and experience in Computer Science.
• 10+ years of mainframe COBOL programming experience, including CICS, JCL, Syncsort, File-AID, VSAM, IDCAMS, TSO/ISPF, SDSF, SQL, and FTP/SFTP.
• 5+ years of experience working across the systems development life cycle.
• Strong communication, analytical, problem-solving, organizational, and prioritization skills.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office and the ability to work independently and collaboratively.
• Eligibility for employment visa sponsorship is available.

Nice to have

• Knowledge of Power BI and mainframe administration systems such as CLOAS, LIFECOMM, or LIFE70.
• Experience with the cloud-based Wealth Management Accelerator system.
• Experience with reinsurance systems and processes, especially the Tindall Associates Inc. (TAI) Reinsurance System.
• Knowledge of the life or long-term care insurance industry and actuarial processes.
