Director, Data Engineering (Databricks, DBT, AWS)

Location: Hybrid, Hartford, Connecticut, United States

Annual base salary: $139,400–$230,000, plus eligibility for performance-based cash incentive awards.

What you will do

• Set technical direction for the enterprise data platform using Databricks, DBT, AWS, and medallion architecture standards.
• Own architecture, design decisions, code quality, and technical delivery across projects led by Tech Leads.
• Lead, mentor, and develop Tech Leads, early-career data professionals, and junior engineers through feedback, learning plans, code reviews, and career development.
• Use Claude and other AI tools to accelerate source-to-target mapping, documentation, validation, and code development while maintaining human review and engineering standards.
• Partner with product, business, and architecture stakeholders to prioritize work and coordinate resourcing across onshore employees and offshore contractors.
• Drive CI/CD, testing, data quality, observability, production support readiness, and operational stability.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in computer science, a related STEM field, or equivalent education and work experience.
• Six additional years of data engineering experience.
• Hands-on expertise with Databricks, DBT, and AWS.
• Experience managing and developing early-career engineers, including coaching, performance management, and structured skill development.
• Experience providing technical leadership to multiple teams or Tech Leads without direct reporting authority.
• Strong communication skills for influencing technical and business stakeholders.

Nice to have

• Experience with Unity Catalog, Delta Lake, Databricks governance, orchestration, and CI/CD tooling.
• Insurance or financial services domain experience.
• Experience managing blended onshore and offshore teams or early-career development programs.
• Hands-on experience applying generative AI tools such as Claude to data engineering work.
• Relevant Databricks or AWS certifications.
