Principal Data Engineer

Location: Creve Coeur, Missouri, USA; hybrid or remote depending on location. Working time zone: US/EMEA.

Salary: $157,250–$185,000 per year.

What you will do

• Design and implement scalable, enterprise-grade data architectures covering ingestion, storage, transformation, serving, and governance.
• Build high-scale pipelines, performance-critical workloads, and platform capabilities on Databricks and Azure.
• Write, review, and refactor production code focused on performance, reliability, security, observability, and cost efficiency.
• Embed with data engineering teams to lead, accelerate, and de-risk critical projects.
• Define engineering standards, architectural principles, reusable patterns, and reference implementations.
• Advise stakeholders on complex data problems and translate business needs into technical strategies.

Requirements

• Extensive data engineering experience delivering production-grade platforms and pipelines at scale.
• Near-expert hands-on proficiency with Databricks, Spark, Lakeflow, Delta Lake, Unity Catalog, and Azure data services.
• Experience designing and implementing end-to-end data architectures for complex enterprise environments.
• Knowledge of Lakehouse, medallion, data mesh, DataOps, metadata-driven, and configuration-driven pipeline patterns.
• Ability to mentor engineers, lead through influence, and raise team-wide technical standards.
• Ability to work within the US/EMEA time zone and the stated USA location arrangement.

Nice to have

• Experience embedding across multiple teams, geographies, and time zones.
• Familiarity with Azure DevOps, Databricks Automation Bundles, GitHub Actions, or equivalent CI/CD and infrastructure-as-code tools.
• Understanding of enterprise data governance, metadata management, and cataloguing.
