Principal Substation Engineer

Location: Remote, United States; occasional travel of 10% or less may be required.

What you will do

• Serve as the senior technical authority for physical utility substation engineering and design.
• Lead and review projects from conceptual engineering through detailed design, IFC packages, construction support, and field issue resolution.
• Develop engineering standards, design criteria, calculation methodologies, technical procedures, templates, and scalable QA/QC processes.
• Coordinate substation engineering with protection and control, civil, structural, transmission, distribution, project management, and construction disciplines.
• Mentor engineers and designers, support technical training and recruiting, and promote technical excellence and continuous improvement.
• Support project scoping, estimating, proposals, client meetings, and development of utility substation opportunities.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or a related engineering discipline.
• Professional Engineer (PE) license with the ability to obtain licensure in additional jurisdictions as required.
• At least 12 years of progressive experience in electric utility substation engineering and design.
• Extensive hands-on experience with physical substation design, including equipment layouts, clearances, bus design, grounding, lightning protection, station service, conduit and cable systems, and equipment specifications.
• Experience as a Lead Engineer, Technical Lead, Engineer of Record, or senior technical reviewer for utility substation projects.
• Knowledge of utility standards and NESC, IEEE, ANSI, NEC, and related industry codes; experience with AutoCAD, MicroStation, Bentley tools, or similar platforms is valued.

Nice to have

• 15+ years of electric utility or utility-focused consulting experience.
• Experience with transmission- and distribution-class substations and multiple concurrent utility capital projects.
• Experience implementing design automation, automated quality checks, or standardized engineering workflows.
• Experience supporting project estimating, proposals, and client development.
