Principal UI Engineer – Design/Developer Tools (React/TypeScript)

Location: United States of America; flexible hybrid work with occasional in-person events or team sessions.

Salary: $143,625–$299,375 per year, plus potential discretionary bonus or commissions.

What you will do

• Own the architecture, scalability, uptime, and APIs of real-time collaboration services, persistence layers, background jobs, and platform infrastructure.
• Design and harden CRDT-based collaborative editing with reliable synchronization, reconnection, conflict handling, undo/redo, and durable saves.
• Build AI-ready interfaces, MCP servers, and automated pipelines for safely inspecting, generating, and changing design systems and codebases.
• Profile and optimize canvas rendering, frame rates, hydration, bundle size, query performance, memory usage, and server health.
• Lead TypeScript monorepo, CI/CD, testing, deployment, observability, incident management, security, and access-control improvements.
• Contribute to React and TypeScript UI engineering, mentor senior engineers, and lead architecture reviews and technical governance.

Requirements

• 8+ years of experience designing, building, and operating production-scale web platforms across frontend and backend or platform engineering.
• Advanced TypeScript, JavaScript, React, and server-side runtime expertise with Node or Bun.
• Hands-on experience with real-time data models, WebSockets, collaborative editing, CRDTs or OT, consistency, concurrency, and failure modes.
• Strong SQL and PostgreSQL foundations, including schema evolution and access-control patterns.
• Experience diagnosing browser and server performance issues using profilers, heap snapshots, and tracing.
• Production operations experience covering metrics, alerting, structured logging, on-call, cloud or serverless platforms, containers, CI pipelines, and multiple environments.

Nice to have

• Experience with LLM-backed features, agentic developer tooling, tool calling, streaming, or MCP servers.
• Expertise with large monorepo orchestration, code generation, Babel or SWC plugins, and AST manipulation.
• Experience with Supabase, managed PostgreSQL, row-level security, large-scale migrations, Redis, and comprehensive automated testing.
• Familiarity with design tokens, component libraries, and design-to-code pipelines.
