Staff Engineer, Battery Capabilities (Lithium-Ion Battery Manufacturing)

Location: Alameda, California, United States; onsite

Base pay: $172,000–$218,000 per year

What you will do

• Evaluate manufacturing processes, equipment designs, and cell design trade-offs.
• Define equipment requirements and lead technical engagements with suppliers.
• Review detailed equipment designs and track project execution.
• Oversee equipment installation and execute acceptance testing, including travel to supplier facilities.
• Direct process development and handoff to the operations team.
• Coordinate with innovation, anode manufacturing, battery engineering, operations, and external vendors.

Requirements

• Minimum 7 years of lithium-ion battery cell manufacturing experience, including cylindrical cell equipment design and line bring-up.
• Minimum 12 years of related experience with a bachelor's degree in engineering or physical science, 8 years with a master's degree, 5 years with a PhD, or equivalent experience.
• Experience evaluating and selecting cell manufacturing equipment and applying mechanical engineering fundamentals.
• Experience managing project schedules, priorities, internal teams, and external vendors.
• Experience incorporating safety, automation, data collection, and regulatory requirements into equipment specifications.
• Ability to work onsite in Alameda, wear required personal protective equipment, move items with lift equipment, and work in low-humidity dry rooms.

Nice to have

• Experience with state-of-the-art cylindrical cell architectures, including tabless or single-tab connections and aluminum cans.
