Staff Applications Engineer (BESS)

Location: Fully on-site at 100 Hooper in San Francisco, California, United States; approximately 25% travel to project sites, active construction sites, and partners.

Salary: $167,500–$220,000 USD per year

What you will do

• Represent deployment, construction, and service needs within the BESS product design team.
• Translate field feedback into design requirements and prioritize changes that reduce installed cost, installation time, and service burden.
• Drive product improvements with mechanical, electrical, and firmware engineering partners.
• Develop and execute validation plans for product installability and serviceability.
• Create installation and service procedures, tooling, and equipment with EPC and service teams.
• Support field deployments and service events by diagnosing issues, gathering data, and closing design gaps.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering preferred, or equivalent experience.
• 8+ years of experience in industrial battery storage or solar installation, design, or deployment.
• Deep system-level understanding of BESS or PV systems, including DC and AC electrical architecture and applicable codes such as NEC.
• Ability to work independently, set priorities, and influence cross-functional teams without direct authority.
• Ability to travel up to 25% of the time, including to active construction sites.

Nice to have

• Experience as a licensed or journeyman electrician.
• Mechanical design experience, including CAD.
