Senior Software Engineer (Payments Risk)

Location: US remote eligible; must live in a state where Airbnb, Inc. has a registered entity. Occasional work at an Airbnb office or attendance at offsites may be required by agreement with the manager.

What you will do

• Design and build scalable, highly available real-time systems and infrastructure for payments risk management.
• Develop risk detection, mitigation, and resolution capabilities to protect users and businesses from fraud and malicious activity.
• Build service-oriented, modular, observable technology stacks with well-defined APIs.
• Integrate internal risk systems with third-party vendors, payment networks, and processors.
• Collaborate with product managers, data scientists, operations, and engineering teams to respond to evolving risk scenarios.
• Implement monitoring and alerting to improve the quality and observability of risk systems.

Requirements

• 5+ years of relevant industry experience as a backend software engineer, preferably in payments or fintech.
• Proficiency in at least one major programming language, preferably Java, Kotlin, or Python.
• Experience with APIs, high-volume data pipelines, efficient algorithms, and large-scale web application architecture.
• Experience delivering products end to end, including planning, implementation, and experimentation.
• Strong skills in code quality, automated testing, data-driven decision-making, and technical tradeoff analysis.
• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in computer science or equivalent experience, with strong communication and cross-functional collaboration skills.

Nice to have

• Experience with React or another JavaScript library.
• Familiarity with experimentation and machine learning techniques.
• Experience in fraud or spam detection and mitigation in the payments domain.
