Senior Payments Backend Engineer

Location: Remote; remote-first position with WeWork access available.

Base salary: $200,000–$220,000 per year, plus equity.

What you will do

• Own the systems that move money between customers, banks, payment providers, and the ledger.
• Build integrations for ACH, RTP, FedNow, wires, cards, and stablecoin settlement.
• Design a multi-provider orchestration layer with routing, failover, idempotency, retries, state machines, and webhook handling.
• Develop instant and batch payouts, cash-advance disbursements, and scheduled repayment collections.
• Set risk controls for high-value transactions, including holds, limits, settlement windows, disputes, fraud, and chargebacks.
• Build operational tooling, rail simulators, agents, MCP servers, and AI-assisted testing and migration workflows.

Requirements

• 5+ years of backend engineering experience with Python, PostgreSQL, and AWS.
• Production experience with real money movement, including ACH origination and returns, RTP or FedNow, wires, or equivalent rails.
• Experience integrating multiple payment providers and operating systems through provider failures.
• Strong knowledge of APIs, webhooks, idempotency, eventual consistency, exactly-once delivery, SQL, and relational design.
• Experience with large transactions, marketplace or two-sided flows, settlement, and payout timing.
• Ability to make product and architecture trade-offs while maintaining high reliability.

Nice to have

• Experience with Stripe, Plaid, Airwallex, PayPal, Modern Treasury, Increase, or payment orchestration platforms.
• Fraud, dispute, chargeback, or risk-tooling experience with Sardine, Sift, or Stripe Radar.
• React and TypeScript experience for payment-method and payout interfaces.
• Distributed systems, stablecoin or on-chain settlement, KYC/KYB, bank partnerships, or hirify.globalernative assets experience.
