Principal Engineer, Substation Engineering (Electric Utility)

Location: Austin, TX, US. Occasional travel may be required, up to 10%.

What you will do

• Lead and review physical substation engineering from conceptual design through detailed design, IFC packages, and construction support.
• Provide technical leadership for greenfield substations, brownfield modifications, expansions, transformer additions, equipment upgrades, and utility capital projects.
• Develop engineering standards, design criteria, technical procedures, calculation methodologies, templates, and scalable QA/QC processes.
• Coordinate substation engineering with protection and control, civil, structural, transmission, distribution, construction, and project management disciplines.
• Review calculations, drawings, specifications, vendor documentation, design packages, RFIs, field changes, and construction issues.
• Mentor engineers and designers, support recruiting and technical evaluations, and contribute to proposals, project scoping, estimates, and client development.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or a related engineering discipline.
• Professional Engineer (PE) license and ability to obtain licensure in additional jurisdictions as required.
• 12+ years of progressive experience in electric utility substation engineering and design, including extensive physical substation design experience.
• Experience serving as a Lead Engineer, Technical Lead, Engineer of Record, or senior technical reviewer on utility substation projects.
• Strong knowledge of equipment layouts, electrical clearances, bus design, grounding, lightning protection, station service, conduit and cable systems, equipment specifications, and engineering calculations.
• Working knowledge of NESC, IEEE, ANSI, NEC, utility standards, and multidisciplinary design interfaces.

Nice to have

• 15+ years of electric utility or utility-focused consulting experience.
• Experience with transmission- and distribution-class substations and concurrent utility capital programs.
• Experience with AutoCAD, MicroStation, Bentley tools, or similar substation engineering platforms.
• Experience with design automation, automated quality checks, standardized workflows, project estimating, proposals, and client development.
