Director, Substation Engineering (Electric Utilities)

Location: Austin, Texas, United States. Regular full-time position with occasional travel of 10% or less.

What you will do

• Develop and execute the strategy, service offerings, organizational structure, staffing plan, and growth priorities for the utility Substation Engineering practice.
• Establish physical substation engineering and design capabilities covering brownfield modifications, expansions, equipment replacements, capacity upgrades, and greenfield substations.
• Lead engineering from conceptual development through detailed design, IFC packages, construction support, and multidisciplinary coordination.
• Build trusted relationships with utility clients and lead opportunity identification, capture strategy, proposals, scopes, and contract support.
• Recruit, develop, and retain engineers, designers, technical leaders, and client-facing practice leaders.
• Own operational and financial performance, including budgets, forecasts, backlog, pipeline, utilization, profitability, quality, and resource planning.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or a related engineering discipline.
• Professional Engineer (PE) license or ability to obtain licensure in applicable jurisdictions.
• At least 12 years of progressive electric utility substation engineering and design experience; 15+ years of utility or utility-focused consulting experience is preferred.
• Strong expertise in physical substation design, transmission and distribution substations, utility capital programs, and multidisciplinary delivery involving P&C, civil, structural, construction, and operations.
• Demonstrated experience leading engineering teams, developing utility client relationships, winning engineering work, and building or growing a practice, department, or business line.
• Experience with utility engineering standards, QA/QC programs, project delivery, AutoCAD, MicroStation, Bentley tools, or similar platforms.

Nice to have

• Experience with design automation, digital engineering, and data-driven design processes.
• Established relationships across electric utility engineering, project management, sourcing, and capital program organizations.
