Payroll Manager (Europe)

Location: Hybrid in Barcelona, Madrid, or Málaga, Spain

What you will do

• Own end-to-end payroll across the United Kingdom, Ireland, Germany, Italy, France, the Netherlands, Belgium, Spain, Portugal, Hungary, Austria, and Switzerland, with possible scope expansion to Bulgaria.
• Ensure accurate, timely, and legally compliant payroll processing, including tax, social security, statutory registrations, benefits, bonuses, commissions, and employment changes.
• Stabilize the global payroll operation in Deel and complete remaining country migrations.
• Design and maintain payroll governance, controls, approval frameworks, RACI structures, SOPs, and audit-ready documentation.
• Partner with Finance, Accounting, Tax, HR Operations, Country Managers, senior leadership, and Deel on reporting, audits, vendor governance, and issue resolution.
• Lead, develop, and coach the payroll team.

Requirements

• 10+ years of payroll experience, including substantial international, multi-country payroll experience and several years in a leadership role.
• Strong knowledge of payroll tax, statutory compliance, labour law interactions, and registration requirements across European jurisdictions.
• Experience with commission-heavy or variable-pay structures and global payroll platforms; Deel experience is strongly preferred.
• Experience stabilizing and optimizing payroll operations after a system implementation and building governance and control frameworks.
• Experience in regulated environments such as fintech, financial services, or payments is a significant advantage.
• Fluent English, written and spoken, is required.

Nice to have

• Experience with Italy, France, Germany, or Bulgaria payroll.
• Additional European languages.
