Senior Embedded Firmware Engineer (ESP32)

Location: Remote within the continental United States; occasional travel within the US is required for client engagements.

Base compensation: $135,000–$145,000 per year, plus up to 10% annual performance bonus.

What you will do

• Design, develop, and maintain production firmware for ESP32-based connected devices using ESP-IDF and RTOS-based development.
• Bring up new hardware and integrate drivers for sensors, actuators, LEDs, and other peripherals.
• Implement BLE provisioning, Wi-Fi connectivity, and secure AWS IoT Core communication over MQTT and TLS.
• Build OTA update mechanisms with rollback and staged rollout capabilities.
• Debug issues across firmware, hardware, wireless, and cloud layers using hardware and protocol debugging tools.
• Collaborate with hardware, mobile, backend, and manufacturing teams on provisioning, certification, telemetry, and production readiness.

Requirements

• 5–8 years of professional embedded or firmware engineering experience with C/C++.
• Significant production experience with Espressif ESP32, ESP-IDF, RTOS, OTA updates, and low-level drivers including I2C, SPI, UART, ADC, and GPIO.
• Hands-on firmware experience with BLE, Wi-Fi, device provisioning, and wireless interoperability troubleshooting.
• Experience connecting devices to AWS IoT Core using MQTT over TLS, certificate-based authentication, and device-state synchronization.
• Experience integrating sensors, actuators, and peripherals and translating technical specifications into production-quality firmware.
• Must reside within the continental US, have proper US work authorization, and be able to travel within the US as needed; visa sponsorship is not available.

Nice to have

• Experience with Nordic nRF platforms, nRF Connect SDK, Thread, Zigbee, Z-Wave, or BLE Mesh.
• Experience with JTAG/SWD, logic analyzers, protocol sniffers, firmware CI/CD, and automated test harnesses.
• Knowledge of secure boot, flash encryption, key management, device attestation, and secure firmware updates.
• Experience with contract manufacturing, EVT/DVT/PVT builds, FCC certification, Protocol Buffers, or Python test tooling.
