Staff Software Engineer (Data Platform)

Location: US - Remote Eligible; must live in a state where Airbnb, Inc. has a registered entity. Occasional work at an Airbnb office or attendance at offsites may be required.

Base pay range: $212,000–$265,000 USD annually, plus potential bonus, equity, benefits, and Employee Travel Credits.

What you will do

• Build and extend Minerva's core services, including the query rewriting service.
• Define and deliver solutions for ambiguous problems affecting experimentation and data usage.
• Partner with users, engineers, designers, product leaders, and teams across the company.
• Track semantic layer techniques and database engine capabilities to inform platform priorities.
• Own system design, implementation, testing, deployment, and on-call support.

Requirements

• 9+ years of hands-on software engineering experience building and deploying production applications and services.
• Deep proficiency in at least one modern general-purpose language such as Java, Kotlin, Scala, Go, Python, or TypeScript.
• Experience with data platforms or data tooling and a strong understanding of user data needs.
• Ability to independently scope and drive ambiguous, cross-team projects from design through launch.
• Strong command of object-oriented programming, API design, and distributed systems patterns.
• Strong communication skills across complex team and system interfaces.

Nice to have

• Experience with experimentation platforms, metrics, semantic layers, BI, or analytics platforms.
• Experience with query engines, query rewriting or optimization, and data warehouse internals.
• Experience authoring DSLs, compilers, or APIs that abstract data transformations.
