Staff Software Engineer (Streaming & Storage)

Location: Hybrid, with 3 days in the office and 2 days remote, based in New York, NY, Santa Monica, CA, or Aliso Viejo, CA

Base annual salary: $300,000–$350,000 USD

What you will do

• Own the technical strategy and architecture for streaming, messaging, NoSQL, and storage platforms.
• Lead the migration from Azure EventHub and ServiceBus to an AWS-native, Kafka-compatible streaming platform.
• Design and operate high-throughput infrastructure processing 10–30 billion events per day for approximately 100 service teams.
• Drive architecture reviews, observability, operational readiness, incident response, reliability, and performance for P0 systems.
• Partner with service teams on migrations, tooling, SDKs, adoption processes, and developer experience.
• Mentor 3–5 engineers and shape the team's multi-year technical roadmap.

Requirements

• 8+ years of software engineering experience, including several years as a technical lead for large-scale distributed systems.
• Deep expertise in event streaming and messaging with Kafka or Kafka-compatible brokers.
• Experience operating production infrastructure at scale, including high availability, incident response, performance tuning, and cost management.
• Experience with cloud data storage, object storage, key-value stores, distributed caches, and search/indexing systems.
• Experience leading multi-quarter, cross-team platform migrations or programs end to end.
• Strong communication skills and experience aligning leadership, partner teams, and engineers on technical direction.

Nice to have

• Experience with schema registries, compatibility tooling, lakehouse formats such as Iceberg, or CDC pipelines.
• Experience with .NET/C#, Python, Kubernetes/EKS, Terraform, or OpenTelemetry.
• Experience mentoring junior engineers.
