Staff Software Engineer (Backend)

Location: Remote with occasional in-person attendance required. Primary residence must be in or near an approved metro area in the United States, Canada, or Mexico.

Salary: $171,000–$255,000 USD annually in California; $141,000–$242,000 USD annually in other US locations; 179,000–225,000 CAD annually in Canada. Equity and benefits are also included.

What you will do

• Set technical direction for the Everand backend through design documents, architecture reviews, and concrete system designs.
• Own backend reliability and platform health across staging, CI/CD, databases, queues, costs, and observability.
• Build scalable, resilient, and observable systems for discoverability, personalization, experimentation, and core reading and listening journeys.
• Modernize legacy systems and remove technical debt to improve engineering velocity and scalability.
• Partner with Product, Design, Analytics, Web, Mobile, and ML engineers on cross-functional planning and delivery.
• Raise engineering standards through code review, mentoring, pairing, testing, operations, and technical leadership.

Requirements

• Significant backend engineering experience building and scaling distributed systems.
• Strong coding skills in at least one modern backend language: Ruby, Scala, Go, or Python.
• Experience with reliability and observability, including SLOs, metrics, alerts, and debugging distributed systems.
• Proven technical leadership in architectural direction, mentoring, and large-scale migrations or modernization.
• Ability to collaborate with senior product, design, analytics, web, mobile, and ML partners.
• Primary residence must be in or near an approved metro area in the United States, Canada, or Mexico.

Nice to have

• Strong Ruby coding ability.
• Experience improving reliability, latency, or throughput in large-scale distributed systems.
• Experience with ML teams on recommendation or feed systems.
• Familiarity with experimentation or feature-flagging platforms.
