Senior Infrastructure Specialist (IBM MQ)

Location: Hybrid role based in Leeds or Manchester, UK, with 40% or two days per week in one of the offices; participation in an on-call rota is required.

Salary: £72,702–£80,780 per year

What you will do

• Lead the design and evolution of IBM MQ and wider middleware services across VMware and Red Hat OpenShift.
• Drive containerisation and Operator-based deployment for enterprise messaging platforms.
• Implement platform engineering, everything-as-code, CI/CD, and repeatable lifecycle management.
• Act as a technical authority with stakeholders, partners, vendors, and senior leaders.
• Champion automation, resilience, observability, and security-by-design.
• Mentor colleagues and improve engineering standards across the Private Cloud platform.

Requirements

• Significant hands-on experience engineering and supporting IBM MQ in large-scale enterprise environments.
• Deep knowledge of IBM MQ architecture, queue managers, channels, clustering, and distributed messaging.
• Experience securing MQ with TLS, certificates, authentication, authorisation, and secure configuration.
• Ability to troubleshoot complex infrastructure, performance, and application-connectivity issues.
• Experience across the MQ lifecycle, including design, installation, configuration, patching, upgrades, and platform management.
• Understanding of enterprise security, risk, change, and operational controls, with strong cross-functional communication.

Nice to have

• Experience with IBM WebSphere Application Server or IBM DataPower.
• Experience with Red Hat OpenShift, Kubernetes, Operators, containerised IBM MQ, or relevant certification.
• Automation and GitOps experience with Git, GitHub, Jenkins, Harness, Ansible, Python, or Bash.
• Experience with Dynatrace, Prometheus, Grafana, VMware, private or hybrid cloud, incident management, resilience, backup, and disaster recovery.
• Agile, cross-disciplinary engineering experience, including mentoring and middleware modernisation.
