Staff Software Engineer (Card Payments)

Location: Remote within the US Pacific time zone, or from offices in the Bay Area or Seattle. The role works US West Coast hours.

Salary: $263,600–$395,400 USD annually, depending on location, skills, experience, qualifications, and market conditions.

What you will do

• Lead one or two complex acquiring projects from design through production rollout.
• Expand direct card-network and acquirer connections and deliver network mandates.
• Build production systems, testing and certification tooling, shared frameworks, and engineering standards.
• Analyze ISO 8583 messages and payment protocols, making technical decisions about routing, retries, authorization rates, fees, and processing costs.
• Partner with technical leads, product, finance operations, Square, Cash App, and Afterpay stakeholders.
• Provide technical guidance, mentorship, code reviews, incident response, and operational ownership for critical financial systems.

Requirements

• Deep card-payment experience at the message level, including integrations with networks, acquirers, or processors using ISO 8583 or an acquirer host format.
• Hands-on experience building and operating highly reliable financial or payment systems at scale.
• Experience leading technically complex projects and setting technical direction for engineers.
• Strong understanding of card-network rules, acquiring, authorization, capture, clearing, settlement, reconciliation, interchange, tokenization, and chargebacks.
• Daily experience building with AI coding agents and sound judgment when evaluating their output.
• Willingness to participate in an on-call rotation for critical financial systems.

Nice to have

• Acquiring or merchant-side experience.
• Experience with direct network connections and ISO 20022.
• Knowledge of partial and incremental authorizations, reversals, tips, currency conversion, and interchange qualification.
