Head of Legal, Commercial (AI)

Location: London, UK; on-site. Open to UK-based candidates and US-qualified attorneys willing to relocate to London.

Salary: Starting from £140,000 per year, with compensation commensurate with experience, skills, and location.

What you will do

• Lead the commercial legal function, including strategy, deal flow, standards, tooling, and team development.
• Personally negotiate complex customer, manufacturing, supply chain, licensing, NRE, JDA, and strategic partnership agreements.
• Set positions and playbooks for liability, indemnities, IP ownership, licensing, data protection, warranties, termination, and service levels.
• Structure and protect IP in technology development, manufacturing, and supply arrangements with engineering and IP counsel.
• Build scalable legal workflows using AI, automation, CLM tools, contract review, redlining, clause extraction, and precedent search.
• Partner with Sales, Supply Chain, Procurement, Operations, Engineering, the CLO, and external counsel on commercial, regulatory, export control, and corporate matters.

Requirements

• Qualified solicitor in England and Wales or US-qualified attorney admitted to a US state bar, with approximately 8–12 years of post-qualification experience.
• Training at a top-tier City, US, or comparable international law firm.
• Demonstrated ownership of complex commercial negotiations and multi-workstream projects, including technology, manufacturing, or supply arrangements.
• Technical IP experience covering ownership, background and foreground IP, licensing, confidentiality, and know-how provisions.
• Experience building or scaling a commercial legal function in a fast-moving technology or hardware business, with line-management or mentoring experience.
• Hands-on AI fluency, strong technical understanding, commercial judgment, direct communication, and a bias toward scalable systems and automation.

Nice to have

• Experience with B2B hardware, semiconductors, infrastructure, or technical manufacturing.
• Supply chain experience involving capacity commitments, allocation, lead times, quality, tooling, and dual sourcing.
• Enterprise or cloud customer contracting, including negotiations with hyperscalers.
• Understanding of US and UK export controls and data protection in commercial contracts.
• Experience with CLM or legal AI tools and light coding or low-code workflow development using Python, SQL, Zapier, n8n, or similar tools.
