Software Engineer, Backend, Level 5

Location: Onsite in Bellevue, Los Angeles, New York, Palo Alto, or San Francisco; expected to work in an office 4+ days per week.

Base salary: $178,000–$313,000 annually, depending on the assigned US pay zone. The position is also eligible for RSU equity.

What you will do

• Design, implement, and operate critical scalable services such as user identity, friend graph, and core persistence systems.
• Collaborate across teams to understand product requirements, evaluate trade-offs, and deliver backend solutions.
• Test, debug, and improve services while maintaining code correctness, security, and production readiness.
• Apply best practices for availability, scalability, operational excellence, and cost management.
• Use AI tools and high-velocity engineering workflows while auditing generated output for architectural, performance, and security risks.
• Investigate and resolve incidents and hotfixes affecting production systems.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in a relevant technical field or equivalent practical experience.
• 6+ years of post-Bachelor’s software development experience, or equivalent experience with a Master’s or PhD.
• Experience with backend services and distributed systems.
• Experience operating highly available systems at significant scale.
• Experience with Java, C++, and/or Python.
• Ability to independently deliver medium-sized features and collaborate effectively with other teams.

Nice to have

• Experience with large-scale microservices, cloud computing, storage systems, infrastructure design, security, networking, machine learning, or natural language processing.
• Experience with NoSQL solutions, Memcache or Redis, Kubernetes, or Google and AWS services.
