TL;DR
Mechanical Engineer (Aerospace): Designing and developing mechanical systems for spacecraft, payloads, technology demonstrators, and ground support equipment with an accent on structural analysis, mechanical interfaces, manufacturability, and space-environment performance. Focus on performing FEA for vibration, shock, thermal, and quasi-static loads, integrating designs with multidisciplinary teams, and validating hardware through assembly and environmental testing.

Location: NASA Ames Research Center, Moffett Field, Mountain View, California, United States. Onsite role with travel as needed.

Salary: $150,000–$180,000 per year

Company

hirify.global supports NASA missions, spacecraft and payload development, technology demonstrations, and related engineering programs.

What you will do

  • Design, model, and analyze mechanical parts, components, subassemblies, spacecraft structures, payloads, and ground support equipment.
  • Develop mechanical subsystems including structures, mechanisms, access panels, fasteners, fixtures, deployables, cable routing, and mechanical lockouts.
  • Perform finite element and structural dynamic analyses for quasi-static, vibration, sine, shock, and thermal environments.
  • Define and control mechanical interfaces, configuration baselines, subsystem architecture, and engineering work products.
  • Create manufacturing, assembly, integration, and test drawings and procedures with machinists and fabricators.
  • Coordinate with electrical, thermal, C&DH, ADCS/GNC, communications, propulsion, software, systems engineering, government, contractor, and mission partner teams.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical, mechatronic, or a related engineering field with emphasis on mechanical design and analysis.
  • 5–10 years of experience in mechanical, structural, aerospace engineering, or a related field involving spaceflight mechanical systems.
  • Proficiency with 3D solid modeling and analysis tools such as Creo, Windchill, SolidWorks, AutoCAD, Nastran, or Patran.
  • Experience with configuration management of mechanical designs, components, subassemblies, systems, and ground support equipment.
  • Detailed knowledge of launch and space environments, plus experience presenting technical data and recommendations to diverse audiences.
  • Ability to pass a Federal Background Check; flexibility for changing schedules, competing priorities, and occasional travel is required.

Nice to have

  • Knowledge of NASA standards and best practices for mechanical design and analysis.
  • Experience with RF or optical payloads, microfluidic systems, or customer relationship management.
  • Working knowledge of Confluence and Jira.
  • Experience assigning work and managing personnel and tasks.

Culture & Benefits

  • Work on NASA missions, spacecraft, payloads, technology demonstrations, and associated ground support equipment.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary engineering, scientific, government, contractor, and mission partner teams.
  • Support project forecasting, performance tracking, milestone reviews, and technical reporting.
  • Travel may be required to support mission and project partners.
