TL;DR
Mechanical Engineer (Spacecraft): Designing and delivering spacecraft electronics enclosures, structures, mounting solutions, and flight hardware from concept through flight with an accent on mechanical design, structural and thermal analysis, and spaceflight requirements. Focus on developing detailed SolidWorks drawings, verifying launch and on-orbit margins, supporting environmental testing, and owning hardware through fabrication, qualification, and delivery.

Location: San Diego, California; 100% onsite

Salary: $110,000–$135,000 annual base salary

What you will do

  • Design mechanical enclosures, structures, systems, and mounting solutions for spacecraft electronics payloads.
  • Create detailed part and assembly drawings in SolidWorks using ASME Y14.5 GD&T standards.
  • Perform structural, thermal, bolted-joint, fatigue, and space-environment analyses for launch and on-orbit conditions.
  • Collaborate with electrical and RF engineers on PCB packaging and mechanical-electrical integration.
  • Develop manufacturing instructions, support fabrication and assembly, and work with vendors to source hardware.
  • Write and execute environmental test procedures, review test data, and present at formal design reviews.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering or equivalent experience.
  • At least 6 years of mechanical engineering design experience related to printed circuit board assemblies.
  • Knowledge of spaceflight requirements, standards, and environments.
  • At least 5 years of experience with SolidWorks, Ansys, or equivalent 3D CAD tools.
  • Strong knowledge of ASME Y14.5 drafting standards and GD&T, plus an understanding of machining and mechanical assembly.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a U.S. security clearance and be a U.S. citizen; applicants must also qualify as a U.S. Person under ITAR and EAR requirements.
