TL;DR
Mechanical Engineer (Aerospace): Designing, integrating, and testing avionics and control components for autonomous aircraft and test laboratories with an accent on rapid design cycles, CAD, system integration, and certification testing. Focus on performing structural and environmental analysis, developing mechanical assemblies and fabrication drawings, and solving integration challenges across aircraft and electro-mechanical systems.

Location: On-site at Merlin HQ in Boston, Massachusetts, United States; travel of up to 25–50% may be required for domestic and international aircraft integration and testing.

Base salary: $115,000–$150,000 per year, plus equity and benefits.

What you will do

  • Design, integrate, and test avionics and control components for aircraft and test laboratories.
  • Perform and oversee system-integration design and analysis, including stress and model analyses.
  • Develop CAD designs and apply industry best practices for GD&T.
  • Support component, system-development, and certification testing through test planning, data analysis, reporting, and documentation.
  • Prepare and coordinate mechanical design, fabrication drawings, and related documentation.
  • Travel to support aircraft and system integration and testing, sometimes on short notice.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical, Electro-Mechanical, or Aerospace Engineering and 5+ years of technical work experience.
  • Advanced modeling experience with SolidWorks, Catia, OnShape, Fusion 360, or Creo.
  • Experience taking designs from concept through detailed design, build, and test using rapid design cycles.
  • Experience leading mechanism design, controls design and analysis, environmental analysis, and structural analysis.
  • Strong organization, analytical, problem-solving, written, verbal, and presentation skills.
  • Must be authorized to work in the United States without current or future visa sponsorship; visa sponsorship and visa transfers are unavailable.

Nice to have

  • Knowledge of RTCA DO-160, DO-254, and MIL-STD-810 qualification and regulatory requirements.
  • Hands-on lab or field experience, including SMT soldering, drilling, hand tools, and mechanical assembly development.
  • Experience with electro-mechanical systems, motors, and EMI/EMC qualification testing.
  • Experience with weight-critical mechanical design, interface management, and laboratory test equipment.
