Staff Mechanical Engineer (Spacecraft): Leading mechanical development for communications satellites, spacecraft subsystems, and interfaces from concept through flight with an accent on mechanical design, thermal architecture, deployable structures, environmental qualification, and manufacturing. Focus on directing technical teams, reviewing structural and thermal analyses, recovering from mechanism and structural failures, and delivering flight-ready hardware.

Location: Westminster, Colorado, United States; on-site. Applicants must be U.S. citizens, lawful permanent residents, conditional residents, asylees, refugees, or eligible to obtain the required U.S. Department of State authorizations.

Salary: $133,000–$161,000 per year

What you will do

  • Lead a mechanical engineering team responsible for spacecraft, subsystems, and mechanical interfaces through the full development lifecycle.
  • Deliver mechanical designs from requirements definition and architecture trades through analysis, manufacturing, assembly, testing, qualification, and in-orbit support.
  • Develop spacecraft structures, mechanisms, electronics packaging, thermal architectures, and deployable or actuated systems.
  • Coordinate mechanical interfaces with GNC, EPS, CDH, Payload, RF, Systems, and AI&T teams.
  • Present engineering design reviews to customers and executives and contribute to proposal writing.

Requirements

  • BS or MS degree in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering.
  • At least 9 years of experience designing communications satellite structures and mechanisms across multiple programs.
  • At least 5 years of technical team leadership experience, including ownership of spacecraft-level mechanical development cycles and contributions to multiple flight missions.
  • Strong experience with mechanics of materials, structural and thermal analysis review, architectural trade studies, FEA and CAD tools such as SolidWorks Simulation, Ansys, or Nastran.
  • Expertise in CNC manufacturing, GD&T, composite sandwich panels, spacecraft primary and secondary structures, and design for manufacturing, assembly, testing, and reliability.
  • Hands-on experience with spacecraft AI&T and environmental test campaigns including vibration, shock, and TVAC, including recovery from structural or mechanism failures.

Nice to have

  • Experience with LEO, GEO, and beyond, ranging from CubeSats and SmallSats to large GEO satellites.
  • Python or other scripting experience.
  • Experience with multiple spacecraft structural and mechanical architectures.
