Associate Counsel (Insurance Defense) - Hackensack/West Orange, NJ

Location: Hybrid role based in West Orange, New Jersey, aligned to venues in Hackensack or West Orange, NJ; travel is required for trials, hearings, depositions, management meetings, and conferences.

Annual salary: $118,900–$186,550.

What you will do

• Defend lawsuits filed across New Jersey courts and handle first-party insurance defense matters.
• Research laws and prepare legal briefs, opinions, and memoranda.
• Advise the Claims Department on liability, damages, and claim value.
• Prepare and manage pleadings, motions, and discovery.
• Conduct and defend depositions, examinations before trial, and examinations under oath.
• Defend assigned matters through trial or dispositive hearings.

Requirements

• 2–6+ years of related field litigation experience in insurance defense and/or personal injury.
• Juris Doctor degree.
• Admission to the New Jersey Bar and an active license in good standing in New Jersey are required.
• Ability to meet and maintain applicable licensing and Continuing Legal Education requirements.
• Strong professional writing, organization, prioritization, multitasking, and conflict-resolution skills.
