Senior Manager R&D Mechanical Engineering (Robotics)

Location: Boston, Massachusetts, USA or Grenoble, France, with in-office expectations of at least 3 days per week. Some domestic and international travel is expected.

Base pay: $137,000–$235,750 per year.

What you will do

• Lead, mentor, and grow a global mechanical R&D team across the USA and France, including hiring, performance management, and career development.
• Define mechanical system and subsystem architectures for next-generation orthopaedic robotic platforms.
• Translate clinical and product requirements into detailed designs, specifications, design-for-excellence activities, and engineering change controls.
• Deliver prototypes and production-ready designs while balancing performance, cost, reliability, manufacturability, schedule, and budget.
• Establish verification and validation plans and support unit, subsystem, system, clinical, and bench testing.
• Partner with systems, software, electronics, clinical, quality, regulatory, supply chain, and manufacturing functions through design reviews, supplier qualification, and production transfer.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, Robotics, Biomedical Engineering, or a related field.
• At least 3 years of people leadership experience managing engineers or engineering teams.
• Experience designing electromechanical systems, including actuators, gear trains, bearings, transmissions, mechanisms, and precision assemblies.
• Strong hands-on experience with CAD tools such as SolidWorks or Creo, GD&T, tolerance analysis, and rapid prototyping.
• Experience taking products from concept through verification and transfer to manufacturing.
• Knowledge of medical-device quality and regulatory expectations, including risk management, FMEA, design history files, ISO 13485, and FDA 21 CFR 820.

Nice to have

• 10+ years of hands-on mechanical design experience, including at least 5 years in medical-device or robotics product development.
• Experience in surgical robotics, orthopaedics, implantable medical systems, or sterile-field design.
• Experience with actuators, harmonic drives, motors, position and safety sensors, cable-driven systems, and medical-device manufacturing processes.
• Experience with regulatory submissions, design history files, global matrixed organizations, and cross-site teams.
• An advanced technical degree such as an MS or PhD.
