TL;DR
Senior Research Acoustic Engineer (Acoustics/Signal Processing): Developing intelligent acoustic systems, signal processing algorithms, and evaluation methods for adaptive audio experiences with an accent on acoustic modeling, psychoacoustics, critical listening, and product-ready prototyping. Focus on connecting physical acoustics, machine learning, perception, and real-time system tradeoffs while transferring validated technologies into products.

Location: Northridge, California, USA; hybrid arrangement with on-site work required. Willingness to travel up to 10% domestically and internationally.

Salary: $97,500–$143,000 per year, with possible additional compensation such as bonuses or commission.

What you will do

  • Advance acoustic research by framing technical questions and turning promising ideas into validated prototypes.
  • Model, build, test, and tune acoustic systems and signal processing algorithms across devices and listening environments.
  • Create repeatable simulation, measurement, critical listening, and evaluation methods.
  • Combine acoustics, audio machine learning, perceptual analysis, physical evidence, and data-driven methods.
  • Develop reference implementations and support technology transfer into product teams.
  • Apply AI-assisted tools to accelerate experimentation, coding, testing, analysis, and documentation while mentoring colleagues and sharing reusable methods.

Requirements

  • Degree in acoustics, electrical or mechanical engineering, physics, computer science, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • Typically at least five years of experience in acoustic research or engineering.
  • Strong knowledge of acoustics, signal processing, acoustic systems design, measurement, psychoacoustics, and critical listening.
  • Experience taking research from initial question through modeling, prototyping, reproducible evaluation, and product integration or a product-ready demonstration.
  • Practical fluency with Python, MATLAB, or equivalent tools for acoustic modeling, measurement, analysis, and automation.
  • Ability and willingness to work on site at the Northridge, California office, complete a background investigation and drug screen, and travel up to 10%.

Nice to have

  • Experience with headphones, loudspeakers, microphones, transducers, active noise control, beamforming, or adaptive signal processing.
  • Experience designing real-time audio systems and evaluating hardware, software, latency, compute, and power tradeoffs.
  • Knowledge of audio machine learning methods and related evaluation data pipelines.
  • Experience with physical prototyping, 3D CAD, rapid fabrication, or acoustic test fixtures.
  • Patents, publications, standards work, or shipped audio technologies.
