Underwriter (Health Insurance)

Location: Fully remote within the United States; candidates residing within a 2-hour drive of the Chattanooga, Tennessee headquarters are preferred. Eastern or Central Time Zone candidates are preferred. Candidates residing in California, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, or New York cannot be hired.

What you will do

• Collect and verify group health application information with sales, account managers, agents, and other stakeholders.
• Perform risk appraisals for group health insurance prospects and renewals.
• Evaluate and classify group risks to determine acceptability, coverage, and pricing.
• Calculate and negotiate rates and premium charges using approved formulas and tables.
• Communicate with stakeholders about group health insurance products, features, and pricing.
• Maintain underwriting guidelines and provide expertise to sales, marketing, membership, billing, legal, and actuarial projects.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in mathematics, finance, accounting, or a related field, or equivalent work experience.
• At least two years of stop-loss underwriting, financial underwriting, actuarial, or financial management experience.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office, including Excel, Outlook, Word, and PowerPoint.
• Strong analytical, planning, interpersonal, organizational, research, communication, negotiation, presentation, and facilitation skills.
• Ability to work independently with minimal supervision or collaboratively in a team environment.
• Sponsorship is not available.

Nice to have

• Experience with stop-loss or financial underwriting.
• Actuarial or financial management experience.
• Experience supporting group healthcare underwriting at a major health insurance organization.
• Interest in predictive analytics, generative AI, or agentic AI tools.
