Software Development Engineer I (Java/Spring)

Location: Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada; required to work from the local office at least 3 days per week

Salary: CAD 65,500–92,000 per year, with potential to increase up to CAD 105,000 based on sustained performance.

What you will do

• Build, test, and deploy features and improvements for Cruise services and applications.
• Translate product requirements and technical designs into clean, maintainable, well-tested code.
• Develop across Java and Spring services, web applications, APIs, databases, and cloud-based systems.
• Participate in code reviews, technical discussions, testing, logging, metrics, and documentation.
• Investigate production issues, support operational fixes, and escalate risks with guidance.
• Collaborate with engineers, product managers, analysts, and partner teams to deliver reliable Cruise capabilities.

Requirements

• Professional, internship, academic, or equivalent practical software development experience.
• Proficiency in at least one modern programming language, with experience or interest in Java and Spring/Spring Boot.
• Understanding of object-oriented programming, data structures, testing, debugging, and version control.
• Ability to learn unfamiliar systems, break work into manageable steps, and seek help when needed.
• Strong collaboration and communication skills.
• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related technical field, or equivalent professional experience.

Nice to have

• Experience with Java, Spring Boot, REST APIs, or service-oriented application development.
• Exposure to React, JavaScript, HTML, and CSS.
• Experience with SQL and relational databases; familiarity with NoSQL databases.
• Exposure to AWS, Linux environments, monitoring, logging, CI/CD, or on-call support.
• Interest in distributed systems, integrations, and cloud services.
