Senior Software Engineering - Device Data Capture (Java/Spring Boot)

Location: Hybrid, with in-office work in Markham or Oshawa, Ontario at least three times per week.

Salary: CAD 115,000–164,600 per year.

What you will do

• Design, build, and operate Java/Spring Boot backend services for vehicle configuration, campaign management, remote device management, and data-plane connectivity across millions of vehicles.
• Lead authorization and security hardening across APIs while retiring legacy v1–v3 endpoints and implementing a consistent versioned API strategy.
• Own architectural decisions for service-to-service communication, event-driven workflows, observability, and multi-region expansion.
• Reduce technical debt through dependency upgrades, framework migrations, and network and security architecture improvements.
• Integrate agent-assisted developer tooling, including automated code-review agents, coding assistants, and MCP-based repository integrations.
• Mentor engineers on service ownership, backend design standards, and operational rigor.

Requirements

• At least 5 years of experience building and operating production backend services, preferably with Java and Spring Boot or comparable JVM/server-side stacks.
• Strong knowledge of distributed systems, API design and versioning, service-to-service security, event-driven architecture, and data-plane scalability.
• Experience leading technical direction on multi-service platforms and documenting architectural trade-offs.
• Experience using agent-assisted engineering tools, automated review bots, coding assistants, or MCP-based integrations.
• Demonstrated ability to deliver technical-debt reduction and security improvements under feature-delivery pressure.
• Must be able to work from the Markham or Oshawa office at least three days per week; GM does not provide immigration-related sponsorship.

Nice to have

• Experience with automotive, IoT, or large-fleet device-management platforms.
• Familiarity with multi-region and over-the-air delivery systems.
• Experience establishing or governing agent-based and automated tooling across multi-repository organizations.
