SRE Manager (VPN)

Location: Geneva or Barcelona office; primarily in-person collaboration

Salary: €62,000–€95,000 gross annually in Barcelona. Compensation for other locations is discussed during the interview process.

What you will do

• Manage and develop a team of eight site reliability and fleet health engineers.
• Lead automation of provisioning, deployment, and repair across thousands of bare-metal VPN servers.
• Own Proton VPN fleet reliability, including SLOs, error budgets, incident response, and postmortems.
• Build observability that measures user experience and throughput by country.
• Set engineering standards and coach engineers to solve operational problems with software.
• Plan capacity and new locations with product engineering, infrastructure teams, network providers, and datacenter providers.

Requirements

• Several years of experience managing site reliability, infrastructure, or platform teams.
• Experience moving teams from manual operations to automated systems and delivering measurable results.
• Strong technical judgment across large Linux fleets, including the ability to review Python and Ansible code and examine postmortems.
• Experience owning production reliability, including SLOs, error budgets, incident response, and postmortems.
• Experience building or rebuilding production monitoring and driving adoption by engineers.
• Experience with physical infrastructure, engineer development, cross-team delivery, and clear technical writing; commitment to privacy is required.

Nice to have

• Deep networking knowledge, including routing, peering, WireGuard, OpenVPN, and packet-level debugging.
• Experience with censorship circumvention or infrastructure in restricted network environments.
• Experience operating fleets across many countries, including vendor and legal work.
• Software engineering experience in Python or another language.
