Senior Staff Engineer (Payments)

Location: Remote in Europe or the United Kingdom

Salary: £117,850 base salary plus equity

What you will do

• Own the delivery outcomes and engineering standards of the new Payments squad within the Saldo billing and payments service.
• Set the technical strategy and architecture for evolving payments from a basic service into a scalable, resilient platform.
• Write specifications and design documents, review ADRs and pull requests, and solve complex problems directly through code and workflows.
• Improve payment accuracy and processing efficiency to reduce the cost of processing transactions as volume grows.
• Define the squad's operating model, manage sequencing and dependencies, and resolve technical blockers.
• Coach junior engineers while partnering with the senior engineer on the most difficult technical challenges.

Requirements

• Track record as a technical lead owning a squad's delivery outcomes and engineering standards.
• Hands-on experience writing design documents, reviewing pull requests and ADRs, and setting technical direction.
• Ability to balance complex hands-on engineering work with coaching junior engineers and maintaining consistent quality standards.
• Experience designing team ways of working from scratch while balancing speed, quality, and resilience.
• Experience managing cross-team sequencing and dependencies, diagnosing throughput problems, and resolving technical blockers.
• Experience with payments syshirify.globals, processing efficiency, and taking a basic service to production scale.
