Senior Backend Engineer (AI)

Location: London, United Kingdom; hybrid working model. Work abroad is available for up to 3 months per year.

What you will do

• Develop backend services and APIs powering AI tools, including generative AI features.
• Build and optimize search systems with a focus on performance, scalability, reliability, and complex data retrieval.
• Contribute to technical architecture, lead code reviews, mentor engineers, and raise engineering standards.
• Research and prototype technologies for AI and search capabilities.
• Work across financial data modeling, access control, ML/AI prediction service integrations, and data visualization infrastructure.
• Own projects through scoping, implementation, delivery, refactoring, automation, documentation, and the full software development lifecycle.

Requirements

• Senior individual contributor experience with systems design, infrastructure discussions, mentoring, and work scoping in cross-functional product teams.
• Strong backend expertise with Python, FastAPI, strong typing, and Pydantic.
• Experience designing data flows from persistent storage to API endpoints, including validation and industry best practices.
• Good working knowledge of SQL and relational databases.
• Experience with search technologies such as Elasticsearch, OpenSearch, or Solr, or with high-performance NoSQL databases for information retrieval.
• Strong communication skills and experience writing testable, maintainable code and reviewing code.
