Staff Software Engineer (Payroll Platform)

Location: Lowell, Massachusetts, United States; hybrid work with three days per week in the Lowell office required. Local candidates are highly preferred.

Salary: $129,500–$186,100 base pay per year, with potential performance-based bonus and restricted stock unit awards.

What you will do

• Define the technical vision, architecture, and modernization strategy for payroll platforms and services.
• Design and evolve scalable, resilient, secure, and maintainable distributed systems.
• Lead cross-team technical initiatives, architecture reviews, proofs of concept, and platform transformation programs.
• Contribute hands-on development for complex, business-critical initiatives and resolve production incidents through root cause analysis.
• Advance observability, reliability, deployment automation, service health, testing, and production readiness.
• Evaluate and integrate AI, generative AI, LLM, machine learning, and intelligent automation capabilities into payroll products and engineering workflows.

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related technical field, or equivalent practical experience.
• 9+ years of professional software engineering experience, including large-scale distributed systems design and operations.
• Expert-level Java proficiency and strong experience with React, TypeScript, backend architecture, microservices, event-driven systems, APIs, and enterprise integration patterns.
• Extensive experience with SQL and NoSQL databases, large-scale data architectures, and cloud platforms such as Azure, AWS, or Google Cloud Platform.
• Experience leading architectural initiatives across multiple teams and implementing observability, reliability engineering, and operational excellence practices.
• Strong knowledge of AI technologies, generative AI, LLM platforms, AI-assisted development tools, and enterprise AI adoption, with excellent communication and mentoring skills.

Nice to have

• Experience with enterprise payroll, HCM, financial, or highly regulated systems.
• Experience with RAG, vector databases, agentic frameworks, machine learning systems, or AI platform integration.
• Experience leading cloud modernization or large-scale platform transformation initiatives.
• Knowledge of security, compliance, privacy, and governance for enterprise SaaS platforms.
• Contributions to open-source projects, technical communities, or industry conferences.
