TL;DR
Optical Assembly and Alignment Engineer (Quantum Computing): Building, aligning, and verifying optical breadboards and laser-delivery assemblies for neutral-atom quantum computers with an accent on free-space beam alignment, fiber coupling, polarization control, and precision optical measurement. Focus on troubleshooting optical loss and alignment drift, documenting repeatable subsystem verification results, and improving first-of-a-kind assembly methods.

Location: Boulder, Colorado, United States; Workplace: On-site

Base salary: $140,000–$170,000 per year, plus annual bonus and equity.

Company

hirify.global develops quantum computers based on arrays of optically trapped neutral atoms.

What you will do

  • Assemble optical breadboards and optomechanical hardware from controlled layouts, drawings, bills of materials, and work instructions.
  • Install and align lenses, mirrors, polarization optics, and fiber-coupling assemblies for required beam paths and subsystem interfaces.
  • Measure optical power, beam profiles, polarization, coupling performance, and, where required, wavefront characteristics.
  • Troubleshoot optical loss, clipping, alignment drift, and polarization errors; document findings and perform approved adjustments or rework.
  • Work with Optical Bonding Technicians to establish pre-bond alignment and verify optical performance after curing or fastening.
  • Complete subsystem verification, maintain measurement records, and support optical issue resolution during system integration.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in optics, optical engineering, physics, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, or a related field, or equivalent relevant experience.
  • At least 5 years of hands-on experience with optical assembly, free-space alignment, fiber coupling, and characterization of precision laser or photonics hardware.
  • Strong practical knowledge of free-space beam alignment, polarization control, fiber coupling, and optical performance relationships.
  • Proficiency with optical power meters, beam-imaging cameras, and related bench metrology.
  • Ability to interpret optical layouts and optomechanical drawings, work safely with delicate coated optics, and maintain reproducible records.
  • Ability to lift and move objects weighing up to 25 pounds.

Nice to have

  • Advanced degree in a relevant discipline.
  • Experience with neutral-atom quantum-computer optics, AMO laboratory systems, or precision scientific instrumentation.
  • Wavefront-measurement experience.
  • Familiarity with measurement-data analysis or laboratory scripting.

Culture & Benefits

  • Collaboration with scientists, engineers, business professionals, bonding technicians, verification teams, and integration teams.
  • Fully paid medical, dental, and vision insurance for employees and dependents.
  • Unlimited paid time off, 401(k) company matching, short- and long-term disability, FSA, dependent care benefits, and life insurance.
  • Annual bonus and equity in the company.
  • Drinks, snacks, and catered team lunches provided daily in the offices.
