Senior/Staff Systems Engineer (Plasma Sensing)

Location: On-site in San Leandro, California, United States; approximately 10–15% domestic and international travel is expected, including customer-site installation, validation, and upgrades.

Base pay: $150,000–$190,000 USD per year.

What you will do

• Own system-level architecture, integration, and validation of a plasma-based sensing platform.
• Guide technical decisions through experimentation, data analysis, trade studies, and cross-disciplinary evaluation.
• Investigate and resolve complex system performance issues using structured experimentation and root cause analysis.
• Establish and evolve documentation practices for experiments, system designs, interfaces, and technical decisions.
• Work with mechanical, electrical, software, and experimental engineering teams to resolve integration challenges.
• Incorporate customer feedback into system design, validation strategy, installation, and upgrades.

Requirements

• B.S. in Engineering or Physics with 5+ years of relevant industry experience, M.S. with 3+ years, or Ph.D. with 2+ years of hands-on systems experience.
• Experience developing automated metrology, inspection, or diagnostic systems through definition, integration, validation, deployment, and customer support.
• Hands-on experience developing, integrating, and validating prototypes, subsystems, and complete systems.
• Proficiency with Python, MATLAB, C, LabVIEW, or similar tools for data analysis, modeling, and system-performance evaluation.
• Experience working across mechanical, electrical, software, and experimental domains in early-stage or ambiguous R&D environments.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills, including clear documentation of complex technical work.

Nice to have

• Experience with manufacturing metrology equipment, sensors, high-precision industrial systems, or process automation.
• Experience with requirements and test management tools such as Jama, or data analysis software such as JMP.
• Experience with early-stage R&D, new product introduction, or capital equipment integration into manufacturing environments.
• Familiarity with high-voltage devices and plasma-based systems.
• Experience in batteries, semiconductors, power generation, energy, electronics, roll-to-roll, or piece-to-piece manufacturing processes.
