Director, Underwriting - Life (Life Insurance)

Location: Fully remote within the lower 48 U.S. states; the listed office location is Grandview Heights, Ohio. Some travel is required.

Salary: $138,000–$243,000 annually; expected starting range: $138,000–$206,000.

What you will do

• Lead 10–12 life underwriters supporting national BGA, brokerage, and producer relationships.
• Oversee complex medical and financial underwriting, including life cases up to $15 million and morbidity underwriting sign-off up to $1 million.
• Manage high-touch relationships with sales teams, producers, firms, reinsurers, and internal business partners.
• Coach, mentor, evaluate, and develop underwriters while building technical depth and succession capability.
• Lead regulatory implementation, audits, compliance responses, operational improvements, and service-quality initiatives.
• Manage staffing, budgets, production standards, workflow capacity, and profitable growth.

Requirements

• More than 10 years of life underwriting experience and more than five years of formal leadership experience.
• Deep expertise in life underwriting risk selection, older-age underwriting, alternative rating methods, pricing, policy language, and reinsurance.
• Experience handling or overseeing large-case underwriting; $10 million-plus cases are strongly preferred.
• Experience in a BGA, brokerage, broker-dealer, producer group, or relationship-driven life insurance environment.
• Strong communication, negotiation, analytical, presentation, coaching, and conflict-resolution skills.
• Undergraduate study in Business Administration or a related field; professional designations such as CLU, FLMI, or FALU are preferred.
