Life & Health Underwriter

Location: Hybrid, based in the Cape Town or Johannesburg office, with an expectation of at least three days per week in the office.

Annual base salary: ZAR 700,000–1,160,000, plus performance-based variable compensation.

What you will do

• Evaluate complex mortality, morbidity, and financial risks for life and health reinsurance business.
• Collaborate with pricing, actuarial, and claims teams to support sustainable portfolio performance.
• Advise cedants on underwriting best practices, training, audits, and process improvements.
• Contribute underwriting expertise to treaty negotiations, product development, and business growth.
• Lead and mentor colleagues while developing underwriting capabilities within the team.
• Represent hirify.global at industry conferences, seminars, and client workshops, and provide portfolio insights to internal stakeholders.

Requirements

• 5–10 years of experience in Life and Health Underwriting.
• Strong experience assessing complex mortality and morbidity risks.
• Deep financial and medical underwriting expertise, including sophisticated and high-value cases.
• Strong knowledge of the South African and broader Sub-Saharan African insurance and reinsurance markets.
• Ability to work collaboratively, lead with confidence, and navigate complex underwriting decisions.
• Availability to work from the Cape Town or Johannesburg office at least three days per week.

Nice to have

• Experience in Life and Health product development or project management.
• Background in a client-facing reinsurance or insurance role.
• Experience leading, coaching, and mentoring junior underwriters or cross-functional team members.
• Experience representing an organisation at industry events, conferences, or client workshops.
• Familiarity with treaty negotiation processes.
