TL;DR
Mechanical Engineer V - Analysis (Solid Propulsion): Performing structural analysis and developing computational models for controllable solid propulsion hardware under high-pressure, thermal, and vibratory conditions with an accent on safety margins, fatigue, fracture, and qualification testing. Focus on validating physics-based models, advancing numerical and data analysis methods, and coordinating design decisions across mechanical, materials, systems, and chief engineering teams.

Location: Remote within the United States, with a preference for in-office work at facilities in Folsom, Reno, Huntsville, or Long Beach. Travel up to 10%.

Base salary: $157,700–$218,300 per year. Nevada pay range: $149,815–$207,385 USD.

What you will do

  • Perform stress, fatigue-life, fracture, linear and nonlinear static, dynamic, and elastic stability analyses.
  • Develop computational models and simulations for systems exposed to high pressures, extreme thermal gradients, and vibratory environments.
  • Collaborate with mechanical design, materials, systems, and chief engineering teams across the hardware lifecycle.
  • Support instrumentation, execution, and data processing for static, dynamic, shock, performance, subscale, unit, and full-scale qualification tests.
  • Develop closed-form, numerical, and data-analysis tools and implement advanced analysis methodologies.
  • Document analysis results and communicate complex technical concepts to internal and external stakeholders.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Aerospace, Mechanical, Applied Physics, or a related engineering discipline with 10+ years of experience, or a relevant master’s degree with 8 years of experience.
  • Experience with FEA software such as Ansys, Femap, Nastran, or Abaqus.
  • Ability to work autonomously, define task scope, identify required inputs, and establish a path forward for ambiguous problems.
  • Direct experience with solid rocket motor design and analysis is preferred.
  • Experience with composite structure manufacturing and analysis is preferred.
  • Active DoD Secret clearance or the ability to obtain and maintain a DoD security clearance is preferred.

Nice to have

  • Master’s degree in Aerospace, Mechanical, Applied Physics, or a related field.
  • Experience with CAD and PLM software, including SolidWorks, Creo, 3DX, or Windchill.
  • Scripting or workflow automation experience with Python, MATLAB, or Excel.
  • Knowledge of MIL-SPEC, SMC, and NASA specifications, including MIL-STD-1522, SMC-S-006/-016, and NASA-STD-5012/-5020.
