TL;DR
Electromechanical Engineer (All-Levels) (Aerospace) (Avionics/Spaceflight Hardware): Designing and integrating space-qualified avionics enclosures, harness architectures, and thermal hardware for lunar rovers and sustained cislunar operations with an accent on structural survival, electrical interfaces, and vacuum thermal management. Focus on solving coupled vibration, radiation-shielding, cryogenic-temperature, grounding, and harness-routing challenges from conceptual trade studies through flight operations.

Location: Hybrid role in Hawthorne, California, United States

Salary: $100,000–$230,000 per year

Company

Astrolab designs and builds lunar rovers, power systems, and data networks for sustained operations on the Moon.

What you will do

  • Lead the mechanical and structural design of space-qualified electronics enclosures for launch vibration, acoustic, and shock environments.
  • Select materials, surface treatments, staking compounds, fasteners, and bonding approaches while balancing stiffness, conductivity, grounding, and outgassing constraints.
  • Produce flight drawing packages with GD&T, torque schedules, and electrical grounding and bonding callouts.
  • Integrate conductive thermal paths, heat pipes, thermal straps, interface materials, heaters, sensors, and MLI for vacuum operation.
  • Architect static and dynamic harness installations, including cable wraps, service loops, twist capsules, flex assemblies, brackets, trays, strain reliefs, and bulkheads.
  • Present packaging, harness-routing, and thermal designs at PDR, CDR, TRR, and MRR milestones, taking hardware through qualification, vehicle integration, and flight operations.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in a STEM-related field.
  • At least 1 year of experience designing and developing physical hardware for high-reliability applications.
  • Experience with 3D CAD tools such as Siemens NX, Creo, or SolidWorks, including mechanical packaging, sheet metal, and machined enclosures.
  • Experience with electrical harnesses, interconnects, wire routing, shielding, and grounding for complex hardware systems.
  • Experience with spaceflight hardware, thermal management, vacuum environments, or aerospace systems is valuable.

Nice to have

  • Experience with Capital Harness, Zuken E3, or NX Electrical Routing.
  • Experience with rigid-flex PCB layouts, continuous-flex interconnects, or moving mechanisms.
  • Knowledge of IPC/WHMA-A-620 Space Addendum and NASA-STD-8739.4.
  • Experience with MLI, bonding and grounding verification, or vehicle harness bundles.
  • Master’s degree in a STEM-related field.

Culture & Benefits

  • Inclusive, direct, transparent, and collaborative engineering environment.
  • Equity ownership in the company.
  • Medical, dental, vision, and mental health benefits.
  • 401(k) plan with company match.
  • Flexible PTO, parental leave, lunch stipend, and on-site refreshments.

Hiring process

  • Application review and recruiter phone interview.
  • Video interviews followed by an on-site interview.
  • Offer and hiring decision.
