Design Engineering Specialist – Electromagnetic Design (Electric Machines)

Location: Mossville, Illinois or Noblesville, Indiana; onsite five days per week. Domestic relocation is available. Travel up to 20% is expected. Visa sponsorship is not available.

Salary: $128,470–$192,710 per year

What you will do

• Provide technical leadership for electromagnetic design, analysis, and optimization of electric motors and generators.
• Define machine architectures and design strategies while optimizing efficiency, power density, torque density, losses, reliability, and system performance.
• Evaluate IPM, SPM, synchronous reluctance, switched reluctance, and induction machine topologies through simulation, analytical methods, and test correlation.
• Lead technology development and New Technology Introduction initiatives, including new design approaches, roadmaps, automation, and optimization tools using MATLAB and Python.
• Collaborate with mechanical, thermal, controls, systems, manufacturing, validation, supply chain, and product teams from concept through production launch.
• Support magnetic material selection, prototype development, testing, supplier engagement, sourcing decisions, and resolution of complex technical issues.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Electromechanical Engineering, or a related engineering discipline.
• Extensive experience in analytical problem-solving, communication, project management, product development through manufacturing, and technical troubleshooting.
• Expertise in electric machine theory, motor and generator design, electromagnetic analysis, and machine optimization.
• Experience collaborating with power electronics and controls teams on inverter constraints, flux weakening, MTPA/MTPV maps, switching schemes, and performance maps.
• Ability to work onsite five days per week in Mossville, Illinois or Noblesville, Indiana; visa sponsorship is not available.

Nice to have

• Master’s degree or PhD in Electrical Engineering focused on electric machines, electromagnetics, or power conversion.
• Experience with permanent magnet and IPM machine design, rotor and stator design, magnet retention, flux barriers, harmonics, demagnetization, NVH, and thermal-electromagnetic analysis.
• Experience with JMAG, ANSYS Maxwell, Motor-CAD, Flux, MagNet, or equivalent simulation platforms.
• Experience with heavy-duty off-highway, mining, industrial, traction, or high-power electric machine applications.
• Experience transitioning technologies from NTI to NPI and mentoring engineering talent.
