Lead Engineer, BESS

Location: Louisville, Colorado, United States. The role requires up to 35% travel.

Salary: $158,000–$198,050 per year, plus an annual bonus.

What you will do

• Serve as the technical subject-matter expert for BESS operations, safety, reliability, performance, and engineering matters.
• Coordinate with field operations on system safety requirements, audit findings, serial defects, equipment testing, troubleshooting, and maintenance.
• Lead root cause analyses, recovery plans, management-of-change activities, asset management standards, diagnostics, and technical improvement projects.
• Develop preventive maintenance procedures, standard operating procedures, training materials, and modernization strategies for BESS assets.
• Guide reliability and performance engineers in operational data analysis, performance correction, and continuous improvement.
• Support new BESS opportunity evaluations through technical due diligence, O&M cost assumptions, technology reviews, and recommendations for project design.

Requirements

• Master’s or Ph.D. degree in engineering or equivalent education, with 10 years of experience or equivalent qualifications.
• Professional experience in BESS operations, engineering, or construction, with 3–5 years preferred.
• Knowledge of CPUC BESS requirements, battery safety audits, fire suppression systems, battery fire science, and prevention.
• Advanced data analysis skills beyond Excel, including Python or R and data from Ignition, Trimark, or Isotrol SCADA systems.
• Knowledge of BESS equipment from OEMs such as Fluence, LG, and Samsung, including battery aging and thermal runaway modeling.
• Leadership, coaching, communication, troubleshooting, planning, project management, and safety awareness skills.

Nice to have

• Experience participating in BESS facility audits and supporting public agency proceedings.
• Experience with hirify.global APEX, Lean Six Sigma, process improvement, business performance, and battery performance optimization.
