Department Manager: Physical Design Engineer (Substation Physical Engineering)

Location: Nationwide remote within the United States

Salary: $174,701–$296,992 annually

What you will do

• Lead, mentor, and develop a multidisciplinary team of substation physical engineers, designers, and technical specialists.
• Manage staffing, recruiting, workload forecasting, resource allocation, utilization, backlog, revenue targets, profitability, and department performance.
• Oversee safe, timely, budget-compliant delivery of substation engineering projects from distribution through EHV transmission voltage levels up to 765kV.
• Provide technical direction for physical design, grounding, lightning protection, AC station service, equipment selection, specifications, constructability reviews, and engineering studies.
• Establish engineering standards, QA/QC processes, design procedures, and operational workflows while supporting digital design, 3D modeling, and continuous improvement.
• Build utility client and industry relationships, support proposals and contract negotiations, and identify opportunities for service expansion and business growth.

Requirements

• B.S. in Electrical Engineering, Power Engineering, or a related discipline.
• Professional Engineer (PE) license.
• 12+ years of experience in substation engineering, design, analysis, or related power delivery services.
• 12+ years of experience with electric utilities, EPC firms, or engineering consulting organizations.
• Experience managing multidisciplinary engineering teams, project portfolios, resource planning, and financial performance.
• Ability to travel for client presentations, field visits, industry conferences, and project reviews.

Nice to have

• Experience with business development, client relationship management, proposal development, and talent retention.
• Knowledge of IEEE, NESC, NEC, ANSI, NERC, and utility-specific design standards.
• Experience with AutoCAD, MicroStation, Autodesk Inventor, Vault, CDEGS, or AGi32.
• Experience supporting construction, commissioning, field engineering, outage planning, and large-scale substation expansion or modernization programs.
