Relay Protection Electrical Technician (IBEW) (High Voltage Substations)

Location: San Carlos, California, United States; onsite. Work is predominantly outdoors and may require travel or transfer to a new headquarters, extended hours, nights, weekends, and holidays.

Salary: $81.55 per hour, subject to collectively bargained wage rates and increases.

What you will do

• Program, install, calibrate, test, troubleshoot, overhaul, and maintain electromechanical, solid-state, and microprocessor protective relays.
• Test and commission switchgear, network relays, substation protection systems, automation and control systems, and synchronized end-to-end protection systems.
• Configure and troubleshoot SCADA and EMS remote-control and data-acquisition systems.
• Perform electrical power switching, plan and schedule work, and submit clearance applications to the Operations Control Center.
• Maintain engineering documents, drawings, test reports, and regulatory compliance records.
• Direct and train Electrical Technician apprentices and work with other technicians in field testing and installation.

Requirements

• At least 18 years old with a high school diploma, GED, or equivalent work experience.
• Valid California Driver's License or ability to obtain one on the first day of hire.
• Three years of experience testing protective relay equipment in a power station or high-voltage substation, or equivalent electrical technician training and education.
• Ability to work safely in all weather conditions, drive in difficult conditions, work extended hours, and wear company-provided PPE.
• Ability to lift up to 100 pounds at least once per day and work on ladders, elevated structures, uneven terrain, and around energized equipment.
• Ability to complete required pre-employment testing, including the Apprentice Electrical Technician Test, Physical Test Battery, and relevant technician assessments.

Nice to have

• Four-year degree in Electrical Engineering, or an associate degree in Electrical Engineering Technology with two years of relay and control experience.
• Previous Journeyman Electrical Technician experience with at least two years in relay and control.
• High-voltage electrical experience, MS Word and Excel skills, or military experience in power production.
