Principal Hardware Engineer (High Speed Mixed Signal Designer)

Location: Boulder, Colorado; hybrid workplace

Base salary: $180,000–$220,000 annually, plus annual bonus and equity.

What you will do

• Drive system architectures for quantum computer control instruments, including PCBA partitioning, FPGA and control selection, power, clocking, and interconnect strategy.
• Guide high-speed mixed-signal front-end design, including analog/RF signal chains, ADC and DAC selection, noise, linearity, and phase-noise requirements.
• Lead instrument design from brainstorming, simulation, and prototyping through schematic and layout reviews, board bring-up, characterization, and production.
• Collaborate with quantum engineers, physicists, hardware engineers, and software engineers to define system and hardware requirements.
• Mentor engineers and contribute directly to the design and debugging of prototype electronic assemblies.

Requirements

• BS or MS in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related technical field.
• 10+ years of relevant professional experience in board-level analog and digital circuit design.
• Experience designing boards with high-pin-count FPGAs or processors, high-speed communication buses, memory, sophisticated clocking, and high-speed analog/RF circuitry.
• Strong PCB design knowledge across the full cycle from concept and fabrication through bring-up and production.
• Mixed-signal design experience and proficiency with oscilloscopes, spectrum analyzers, logic analyzers, signal generators, and similar test equipment.
• Ability to communicate and collaborate with experimental physicists, hardware engineers, and software engineers.

Nice to have

• RF design, software-defined radio, high-speed digital and analog I/O, or connector and cable characterization experience.
• Multi-gigabit serial transceiver design, evaluation, equalization, and IBIS-AMI modeling experience.
• Python or other scripting experience for data acquisition, instrument control, and hardware test automation.
• High-speed memory interface design experience and familiarity with Linux.
• Experience with MicroTCA, PXIe, or similar pluggable instrument standards.
