Staff Software Engineer, Backend (Search)

Location: Remote Canada; open only to candidates residing in Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba, New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia, Ontario, Prince Edward Island, or Saskatchewan.

Base pay: CAD $181,000–$241,000 per year.

What you will do

• Set the team’s technical strategy over a year-long horizon and connect it to business-impacting projects.
• Collaborate with product management, design, analytics, and engineering teams throughout the product development lifecycle.
• Define and advocate for technical solutions and operational processes that increase team effectiveness.
• Own system operations and availability through monitoring, triage rotations, playbooks, policies, testing, alerting, and on-call practices.
• Establish code review and design standards while promoting engineering quality through writing and technical talks.
• Develop team talent through feedback, guidance, and technical leadership.

Requirements

• 8+ years of experience designing, developing, and launching backend systems at scale.
• Experience with Python or Kotlin and highly available distributed systems.
• Experience with AWS, MySQL, Spark, and Kubernetes.
• Experience developing consumer experiences with React or similar UI frameworks.
• 2+ years of experience working in search or related recommendation engines.
• Experience defining technical and execution plans, delivering major system features, and writing high-quality, maintainable code.
