Staff Software Engineer, Data Platform (PostgreSQL)

Location: 100% remote from anywhere in the U.S. In-person office hubs are available in Boston, New York City, and Paris.

Salary: $170,000–$190,000 USD per year, plus equity, PTO, and other benefits.

What you will do

• Lead the design and architecture of complex systems within the Datastore data platform.
• Build and scale PostgreSQL data models, Kafka-driven event pipelines, and GraphQL APIs for clinical and scientific data.
• Own dataset snapshot pipelines into the data warehouse, including producers, consumers, replay, idempotency, and failure handling.
• Design schema evolution, performance improvements, access controls, and reliable production operations for PostgreSQL.
• Collaborate with product, scientific, clinical, platform, application, and support teams to deliver integrations, services, and new workflows.
• Write RFCs, debug cross-system problems, improve tooling and documentation, and mentor engineers.

Requirements

• 7+ years of backend development experience, including at least 3 years with data platforms and backend infrastructure.
• Strong SQL and production PostgreSQL experience, including schema design, indexes, query plans, and query tuning.
• Experience with Kafka or an equivalent event-streaming platform such as RabbitMQ, Pulsar, or Amazon Kinesis.
• Proficiency in Julia or Python; willingness to learn Julia is welcome.
• Experience operating containerized services, with familiarity in Kubernetes and Infrastructure as Code tools such as Terraform or Helm.
• Must be located in the United States for this remote role. Strong written and verbal communication skills are required for asynchronous, remote-friendly collaboration.

Nice to have

• GraphQL and TypeScript/JavaScript with Node.js experience.
• Deep PostgreSQL expertise, including EXPLAIN ANALYZE, index selection, zero-downtime migrations, replication, backups, connection pooling, vacuum behavior, and extensions.
• Experience with LLM-assisted or agentic coding tools in production.
• Experience designing data models for temporal clinical results and schema evolution under load.
