TL;DR
Radiation Effects Engineer Intern (Winter 2027) (Aerospace): Modeling, analyzing, and electrically testing spacecraft hardware in space radiation environments with an accent on component degradation, fault-tolerant systems, and radiation test campaigns. Focus on designing test plans and fixtures, characterizing total ionizing dose and single-event effects, and diagnosing issues across hardware testing activities.

Location: San Francisco, United States; requires work at laboratories across the U.S.

Base pay: $29.00 per hour

What you will do

  • Evaluate and electrically test fault-tolerant electrical systems operating in radiation environments.
  • Create electrical test plans, develop test fixtures, and document test activities and results.
  • Support radiation testing campaigns for total ionizing dose and single-event effects through pre-, during-, and post-exposure electrical characterization.
  • Collaborate across disciplines to inform spacecraft design decisions involving radiation effects.
  • Build breadboard circuits, verify automated test setups, and fabricate basic cable harnesses.

Requirements

  • Currently pursuing a B.S. in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related engineering field.
  • Hands-on hardware development, electrical testing, and troubleshooting experience.
  • Proficiency with oscilloscopes, multimeters, power supplies, and source meter units.
  • Experience with Altium Designer or other PCB design software for schematic capture and board layout.
  • Ability to design, build, and rigorously test electrical hardware from scratch.
  • U.S. citizenship, U.S. lawful permanent residency, or refugee/asylee status required.

Nice to have

  • Familiarity with space radiation effects on semiconductor devices.
  • Experience with SPICE-based circuit simulators such as LTSpice, PSPICE, or ADS.
  • Soldering, rework, and specialized test harness construction experience.
  • Knowledge of integrated circuits, PCBAs, sensors, and performance benchmarking.
  • Experience with radiation transport software such as FastRAD, Novice, or MCNPX.
