TL;DR
2027 Systems Engineering Intern (Aerospace): Supporting the definition, integration, testing, verification, and documentation of complex aerospace and defense systems with an accent on requirements engineering, system architecture, and technical analysis. Focus on identifying system-level risks, developing verification methods, troubleshooting integrations, and analyzing engineering and test data.

Location: San Diego, Long Beach, or Pittsburgh, United States. The 10-week internship runs from June 7, 2027, to August 13, 2027, with in-person orientation, program kickoff, and final presentation travel required.

Hourly pay: $23.50–$30.00 per hour, depending on academic year, major, business line, and geography.

What you will do

  • Define, review, decompose, and track system-level requirements.
  • Develop and document system architectures, interfaces, and technical specifications.
  • Identify technical risks, dependencies, and system-level issues.
  • Support system development, integration, troubleshooting, and technical problem-solving with cross-functional engineering teams.
  • Define verification and validation methods and assist with test plans, procedures, and execution.
  • Collect, analyze, and document engineering data, test results, and technical artifacts.

Requirements

  • Currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program at an accredited university, preferably in Systems Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Physics, or a related technical field.
  • Understanding of fundamental engineering principles and systems engineering concepts.
  • Strong analytical, critical-thinking, problem-solving, communication, organizational, and time-management skills.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a cross-functional environment and learn new engineering tools and methodologies.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen, lawful permanent resident, protected individual, or eligible to obtain required U.S. Department of State authorizations under ITAR regulations.
  • Ability to travel for in-person orientation, program kickoff, and the final presentation.

Nice to have

  • Previous internship, coursework, academic project, laboratory, or other relevant engineering experience.
  • Experience with requirements development, systems engineering, system integration, testing, or technical documentation.
  • Familiarity with CAD, electrical design, modeling and simulation, or requirements management tools.
  • Programming or data analysis experience with Python, MATLAB, C/C++, or similar languages.
  • Hands-on experience with laboratory equipment, engineering test equipment, prototyping, or experimental testing.
